Nerikomi Clay Gem Earrings

A$80.00

Nerikomi is an ancient Japanese ceramic decorating technique, achieved by creating a clay block made of layered, coloured slabs and slicing through a cross section to reveal intricate and delicate patterns within. Once the work is formed and partially dried, the outer layers of clay are carved away, leaving a finely patterned core. The work is sanded after the bisque (first firing) and then again after the stoneware firing. I’s a patient, meditative and slow process but the results are so satisfying!

Because nerikomi is not a surface decorating technique (the clay itself forms the decoration) every part of the work is patterned and patterned differently, depending on the movement of the clay within the clay block. This means that the sides and back of your clay gems exhibit unique patterns of their own!

Instead of staining the clay, I’m combining clays of different colour, Southern Ice porcelain for that distinctive, translucent, arctic white, a black midfire clay and two brown stonewares.

These carved and polished clay gems are subtle, sophisticated and earthy. They have a gentle asymmetry which speaks of handmadeness and the neutrals and naturals blend easily with all your favourite outfits! A small but versatile and detailed accent piece.

Handcrafted argentium silver balled shepherds hooks by Bayside Melbourne metalsmith Findings By Lynda.

The ceramic pendants are approximately 2 cm (h) x 1 cm (w).
